About Whale Shark
Over the course of the past years, thousands of curious tourists and whale shark enthusiasts arrived from all parts of the globe to join excursions from Isla Mujeres to the waters off the tip of the Yucatan Peninsula where they had the thrill of swimming with the world's largest fish.
The whale shark is a non-aggressive, filter feeding fish averaging about 33 feet, which comes to a rich feeding area less than one hour from Isla Mujeres between mid- May and mid-September. Here you are virtually guaranteed to see the sharks in the wild as they follow the currents that carry their food.
Authorities have implemented restrictions to protect the marine habitat, but under the supervision of a guide, visitors are permitted in the water two at a time to get up-close to (but not touch) these magnificent creatures.
